“Nobody in the family was unhappy to leave the long winter of Stockholm to take up residence for a couple of years under the sunny skies of the Levant. What we didn’t know at the time was that i would hold the post as the Swedish ambassador to Cyprus for eight years(…) I have always kept a diary, in English since I spent several years in the United States. What follows are excerpts from my accumulated notes from the period when there was a real movement of the Cyprus issue, leading up to the referendum on the UN Plan in 2004. In a way it resembled the story of Oliver Sacks Awakenings: when a new drug was introduced – in this case membership of the EU – the patient woke up for a while from its encephalitis letargica only to fall back again into its sleeping sickness once the drug had exhausted its power.”
